Emergency Shelter: Volunteers
A warming shelter has been established in Wilson County to provide emergency warmth, shelter, and necessary support for up to 25 individuals during extreme weather. Wilson County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and local community partners will be involved in coordinating logistics, personnel, and facility needs. Due to the upcoming forecast of below-freezing temperatures, the shelter will be open from 3:30 PM on February 19 until 9:00 AM on February 22.
Opening the shelter will require many volunteers.
As a Shelter Volunteer, you may be responsible for:
- Sitting down with someone who may be feeling isolated or marginalized and simply listening to their story,
- Sharing a warm cup of coffee and offering a moment of comfort and companionship,
- Building meaningful connections and bridging the gap between different walks of life,
- Offering a listening ear and a supportive presence to someone who may need it most,
- Overseeing the daily operations,
- Managing the staff and volunteers on-site,
- Coordinating resources for guests,
- Assisting guests with bedding,
- Serving food to guests,
- Assisting with sanitation (cleaning and disinfecting),
- Provide support to those needing help,
- Assisting the WEMA and law enforcement staff if medical issues arise.
